With the second season of House of the Dragon less than two months away, HBO is stoking the fire by releasing a brand new trailer for the series’ anticipated return, which asks the cast to defend their council as the rightful heir to the Iron Throne. "House of the Dragon" season 2 will premiere on Max on June 16, according to a release by Max that revealed it will debut on the service's expanded Europe offering the following day. With that said, this series has been plotted out for four seasons, and that plan could change, but it’s unlikely that we will see the entire war take place in Season 2.

Not content with releasing one new House of the Dragon season 2 trailer in March, HBO gave us three instead. The first, which you can view above, has been dubbed the "dueling" trailer, and its 40-second runtime teases the ominous and fiery showdown that's set to play out between House Targaryen and the House Hightower. George R.R. Martin apparently saw the first two episodes of Season 2, which he teased as "very dark." Season 2 will also be shorter than the first, with eight episodes compared to 10 for the first season.
Actor Tom Taylor (The Dark Tower, The Kid Who Would Be King) debuts in the Rhaenyra-themed trailer... Hopefully, we will at least see the inevitable showdown between Daemon and (Mini-Me) Aemond, and if that plot point follows the Fire and Blood book, both men should be very afraid. Showrunner Ryan Condal says the second season will feature five new dragons, which could hint at a specific Fire & Blood plot leading up to the Targaryen civil war. The first season received highly positive reviews, with praise towards its character development, visual effects, writing, score by Ramin Djawadi, and performances. However, the pacing, specifically of the time jumps, and the dark lighting of some scenes were criticized. The series premiere was watched by over 10 million viewers across the linear channels and HBO Max on the first day, the biggest in HBO's history. At the 80th Golden Globe Awards, House of the Dragon won Best Television Series – Drama and D'Arcy was nominated for Best Actress in a Television Series – Drama.
"House of the Dragon" season 2 will follow up on what's already taken place. Though his named heir is Princess Rhaenyra, his wife Queen Alicent and her father Otto Hightower have schemed to put Aegon II on the Iron Throne. But Rhaenyra and uncle-husband Prince Daemon aren't going to back down from her claim.
However, while there may be two clear sides to the fight, the allegiance of the many key figures and players – in true Martin style – are most certainly blurred. If you’re struggling to remember everyone’s names, we don’t blame you. There’s a lot of characters to keep track of, but when season 2 comes to fruition, we know it’ll all come together nicely.
